A Clinical Analysis of fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Gytologic Diagnosis on Thyroid Nodules

Abstract
ABSTRACT
@EN The Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Cytologic specimen obtained from 1,500 consecutive patients (male:99, female:1401) with thyroid nodules attending at SEOUL KWANG-HYE INT. MEDICINE CLINIC from March 1986 to March 1993 were studied.
Results of the Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Cytologic findings of 1,500 consecutive cases with thyroid nodules shows 906 cases (60.4%) with benign or hyperplastic, inflammatory changes with 206 cases (13.7%), neoplasia (benign or malignancy)
with
201
cases (13.4%), and incomplete diagnosis due to insufficiet materials with 187 cases (12.5%) were as follows;
Considering of age & sex distribution mean age was 37 years of age (10~82 years of age), it developed namely in 20 and 50 decades. 906 cases with benign, hyperplastic conditions were classified 533 cases (58.8%) with cystic nodules, 294 cases
(32.5%)
with follicular cells with colloid, 79 cases (8.7%) with follicular hyperplasia (Graves' disease).
Age distribution of patients with benign condition was 38 years of age (13~72), its peak incidence was decades of thirty and fifth.
The analysis of 206 cases with inflammatory changes shows 6 cases (2.9%) with acute thyroiditis, 13 cases (6.3%) with subacute thyroiditis, 132 cases (64.1%) with lymphocytic (include postpartum) thyroiditis, 55 cases (26.7%) with Hashimoto's
thyroiditis.
201 cases with neoplastic changes shows follicular neoplasia 111 cases (55.2%), 77 cases(38.3%) with papillary carcinoma, 11 cases (5.5%) with undifferentiated or anaplastic carcinoma, 2 cases (1.0%) with Hurthle cell tumor.
In conclusion, I recognized that the prevalence of thyroid malignancy is low (less than 10%) compared with known abroad results (15~20%) and a lot of patients with thyroiditis, esp., subacute, complained of painful and tender nodules on the
thyroid. In
benign or hyperplastic conditions, prevalent disease is cystic lesions (58.8%) with simple or follicular degeneration (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 8:326~333, 1993).
